Australian Group Races are the highest class of thoroughbred race in Australian racing. The most recognised group races in Australia are the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup, Golden slipper and WS Cox Plate, which are all Group 1 races.

Group races total over 540+ races each year which works out around 2-3% of total races held each season in Australia.

Group races are divided into 4 categories;
Group 1 - at least $250,000 prizemoney - 60+ races per season
Group 2 - at least $125,000 prizemoney - 80+ races per season
Group 3 - at least $75,000 prizemoney - 110+ races per season
Listed - at least $50,000 prizemoney - 280+ races per season

The Australian horse racing season runs from August to July each year and we have listed all the Group 1 and Group 2 races on the racing calendar.

The Coolmore Classic is a Group 1 Australian thoroughbred horse race for fillies and mares. It is a set weights race, run over a distance of 1500 metres at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse, Sydney in April. Prior to 2008, it was held in March.

This race is run on the opening day of the Golden Slipper festival along with the Gr1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes . Being registered originally as the T A D Kennedy Stakes, it has changed many names to finally be known as the Coolmore Classic, attaining the level of group one race in 1984.

The winner is of this race is exempt from ballot for the Doncaster Hcp.

Some classy females have won this race including mighty mare Sunline (2000/2002) and Assertive Lass in 1997. In recent times, the Coolmore has been won by Eskimo Queen (2008) Tuesday Joy (2007) and Regal Cheer in 2006.
